Hemicellulose extract may be safely used in animal feed when incorporated therein in accordance with the following conditions: (a) The additive is produced from the aqueous extract obtained by the treatment of wood with water at elevated temperatures (325 degrees- 535 degrees F) and pressure (80 to 900 pounds per square inch) and contains primarily pentose and hexose sugars. (b) The additive may be used in a liquid or dry state with the liquid product containing not less than 55 percent carbohydrate and the dry product containing not less than 84 percent carbohydrate. (c) The additive is used as a source of metabolizable energy in animal feed in accordance with good manufacturing and feeding practices.
