Subpart 12.25_Certificates of Service for Ratings Other Than Able Seaman 
              or Qualified Member of the Engine Department
 
Sec. 12.25-10  General requirements.

    (a) Merchant mariner's documents shall be issued without 
professional examination to applicants for certificates of service as 
endorsements on merchant mariner's documents in capacities other than 
able seaman, lifeboatman, tankerman or qualified member of the engine 
department and shall be endorsed for one or more ratings. For example, 
ordinary seaman--wiper--steward's department (F.H.). Holders of 
documents endorsed for service as ordinary seaman may serve in any 
unqualified rating in the deck department. Holders of documents endorsed 
for service as wiper may serve in any unqualified rating in the engine 
department. Documents endorsed for steward's department (F.H.) will 
authorize the holder's service in any capacity in the steward's 
department. (See Sec. 12.02-11(e)(2) for unqualified ratings in the 
staff department.)
    (b) When the holder of a merchant mariner's document has qualified 
as a food handler, the endorsement of his rating will be followed by the 
further endorsement (F.H.).
