As used in this subpart, the following definitions shall apply: (a) Department means the United States Department of State, including its field offices and Foreign Service posts abroad. (b) Individual means a citizen of the United States or an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence. (c) Maintain includes maintain, collect, use, or disseminate. (d) Record means any item, collection, or grouping of information about an individual that is maintained by the Department, including, but not limited to education, financial transactions, medical history, and criminal or employment history, that contains the individual's name or the identifying number, symbol, or other identifying particular assigned to the individual, such as a finger or voice print or photograph. (e) System of Records means a group of any records under the control of the Department from which information is retrieved by the name of the individual or by some identifying number, symbol, or other identifying particular assigned to an individual. (f) Control has the meaning set forth in Sec. 171.11(f) (g) Information and Privacy Coordinator has the meaning set forth in Sec. 171.11(d). (h) DS is the abbreviation for the Bureau of Diplomatic Security of the U.S. Department of State. (i) OIG is the abbreviation for the Office of the Inspector General of the U.S. Department of State.
